    Why BPA is bad?

    Why BPA is bad?

BPA or Bisphenol A is a chemical that is generally used in the manufacture of plastics. In the 1950s, scientists discovered that adding BPA to plastics makes them stronger and more durable. Henceforth, it is being added to almost all plastic products, especially the plastic lunch boxes and water bottles we use to carry our food and water every day. The basic problem with BPA in our food containers and water bottles is that on constant exposure to hot foods and water it is known to leach off into the food and water contained inside, contaminating them. Hence, people who use plastic containers to carry their lunches and water are, more often than not, consuming BPA along with their healthy, home-made lunch!

The adverse of BPA on children and adults

BPA is a toxin and constant exposure to this harmful substance has adverse effects on the health of adults as well as kids. Studies have shown that BPA adversely effects growth and development in infants and kids. A number of studies conducted on pregnant women indicate that fetal growth is affected and infants of pregnant women exposed to BPA are consistently born underweight. Infants and young children exposed to BPA through plastic feeding bottles and water bottles have shown signs of physical and mental under-development and behavioral issues. Constant exposure to BPA isn’t good for adults as well as it has been linked to fertility problems in both men and women and has adverse effects on the brain, liver, thyroid and can cause hormonal imbalances and related problems like PCOS and thyroid issues. Long term exposure to BPA has been linked to asthma as well.

    How to avoid BPA

The best way to avoid BPA is to avoid plastics. Avoiding plastics on a whole can be advantageous for your health and is also good for the environment. Especially when it comes to packaging and carrying hot lunches for you and your kids, it is better to go for alternatives to plastics.
